Patrick Star, SpongeBob SquarePants’ dimwitted best friend, crawled out from under his rock in Bikini Bottom to commentate on an NFL game this past Sunday.
Over the weekend, the Los Angeles Rams crushed the Denver Broncos in a 51-14 blowout.
“The Broncos, and those are the big horsey players, they have the ball,” observed Patrick Star in an NFL video that has over 4 million views. “They’re gonna see if they can find a way to move it.”
At the 19-yard line, Russell Wilson, the quarterback for the Denver Broncos, threw a pass which was caught by Bobby Wagner, a linebacker for the LA Rams.
“That’s called an intraception,” added the pink starfish. “That’s not what he [Wilson] wanted to cook,” a reference to the “Let Russ Cook” meme.
“I think he burnt whatever he was cooking,” added CBS Sports’ Noah Eagle.
“Bobby Wagner coming to town and doing that with his old teammate,” continued Patrick Star.
Wilson and Wagner were former teammates on the Seattle Seahawks. While playing for the Seahawks in 2014, Wilson and Wagner worked together to win Super Bowl XLVIII in a 43-8 game against the Denver Broncos and legendary quarterback Peyton Manning.
The slick burn by Patrick Star has garnered internet-wide attention.
“Getting roasted by Patrick Star is not how I’d want to be remembered,” said one Twitter user.
Another user added, “Patrick [is] cooking Russ.”
Patrick’s unconventional commentating skills have garnered attention from not only Twitter users, but also the NFL.
“Patrick Star really has a future as a play-by-play announcer,” the NFL tweeted with a star-eyes emoji.
As those familiar with the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise will know, Patrick Star is a notoriously terrible employee who fails at every career he half-heartedly attempts.
Beyond working as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab when SpongeBob was injured, Patrick has been a chocolate bar salesman, a security guard, and even a CEO. All of his careers crumbled into cartoon calamity.
Perhaps, a career as an NFL commentator is the perfect new trajectory for Patrick Star.
