While Super Bowl Sunday is one of the most exciting days of the NFL season, it isn’t just the action on the field that football fans eagerly look forward to. It’s also the food.

Bid-on-Equipment performed a study that investigated the top game-day foods from each state, and some of the results are surprising. The study had two parts: first, a survey of over 1,000 people during which respondents were asked about their Super Bowl plans, and second, an analysis of over 9,000 Google search terms to determine the most popular foods during the game.

Bid-on-Equipment’s survey found that over four of five Americans plan to watch the Super Bowl this year. Of these viewers, 74% have chosen to prepare homemade food for the game, and 26% have opted to call their local eateries for takeaway.

While many football fans prefer to cook at home, there are still many food options to choose from before the big game. Bid-on-Equipment’s survey results suggest that many states have differing opinions about what constitutes must-have Super Bowl eats.

In Texas, chips and salsa were determined to be the most popular Super Bowl food. Only three other states — Hawaii, Arizona, and North Carolina — ranked chips and salsa as their number one food,

Based on Bid-on-Equipment’s analysis of Google search terms, meatballs are the most popular Super Bowl food for 2023 nationwide. Guacamole, chips and salsa, tater tots, and chili rounded out the top five.

Although people may think about buffalo wings when they imagine Super Bowl foods, they were surprisingly listed as only the sixth most popular food item. Despite coming in at sixth, the survey found that almost two out of every five Americans still plan on having some during the game. They were also ranked as the favorite Super Bowl food in seven states, including Illinois, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Respondents from Rhode Island also claimed to enjoy their game-day wings, but skip the spice with a garlic parmesan sauce instead.

Super Bowl Sunday will include a lot of unhealthy nibbles, but some cities are choosing to make their spread as healthy as possible. Denver, Seattle, Washington D.C., Portland, and Baltimore were the top five ranked cities looking for the healthiest recipes for their Super Bowl appetizers, according to the study.

On the other hand, Google search terms from New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, and San Antonio suggest that these five cities might be serving up the unhealthiest foods this weekend.
