The Kimbell Art Museum has released its lineup of new exhibitions for the 2022-2023 season, featuring the Spanish Golden Age, Maya Art, and the works of French painter Pierre Bonnard. The new season of exhibitions was co-curated by Kimbell and the Metropolitan Art Museum.
Murillo: From Heaven to Earth is a collection of works by the Spanish Golden Age painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682).
Featuring 50 pieces, it is the largest display of Murillo paintings in the United States in 20 years.
Although the artist is best known for his works of Christ and other biblical figures, this exhibition concentrates on everyday life in 17th-century Seville. Themes surrounding youth and age are prevalent throughout the collection, featuring beggars, street urchins, and flower girls.
Murillo: From Heaven to Earth will run from September 18, 2022, through January 29, 2023.
Drawing from collections across Europe, Latin America, and the United States, Lives of the Gods: Divinity in Maya Art brings 120 rarely seen artifacts and masterpieces together that depict the lifecycle of the gods, from the moment of their birth to their resplendent transformation as blossoming flowers or fearsome creatures of the night.
The exhibition includes works from the Classic Period of A.D. 250 – 900 from what is now known as Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico.
Lives of the Gods: Divinity in Maya Art will run from May 7, 2023, through September 3, 2023.
The final exhibition coming to the Kimbell Art Museum is by French painter Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947).
Inspired by the museum’s acquisition of the Landscape at Le Cannet (1928), Bonnard’s Worlds depicts the cities and landscapes of Paris, Normandy, and the South of France, as well as the more private and intimate interior spaces of his dwellings and his thoughts.
Seventy of Bonnard’s finest works, created throughout his career, will be featured, including those borrowed from museums in Europe and the United States and private collections.
Bonnard’s Worlds will run from November 5, 2023, through January 28, 2024.
Current exhibits at the Kimbell Art Museum are The Language of Beauty in African Art, running through July 31, 2022, and SLAY: the works of artists Artemisia Gentileschi and Kehinde Wiley, on display through October 9, 2022.
