The Greater North Texas affiliate of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) will host their Inaugural JCH Memorial Golf Classic on Monday, May 2 at 7:00 a.m. (CT) at Bear Creek Golf Club.

Proceeds from the event will benefit HDSA’s mission to improve the lives of those affected by Huntington’s Disease (HD).

Huntington’s Disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes a breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. The symptoms of HD are like having the symptoms of ALS, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s simultaneously. People diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease suffer debilitating physical and mental degradation during their prime working years.

Children who have a parent with HD have a 50% chance of being diagnosed with the disease. Approximately 41,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with HD, and 200,000 more are at risk of inheriting the incurable disease.

“I am so honored and excited to be hosting the upcoming event,” said Haley Pearce, the golf classic coordinator. “This will be held in remembrance of my grandfather, Jimmy Hawkins, who passed in November of 2006 due to complications from Huntington’s Disease. He was fun, loving, and truly one-of-a-kind. He loved playing golf and being with family and friends. I hope this is a time for people to come together to play golf, learn more about HD, and to be able to raise money for the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. I cannot wait to see this year’s turnout and the growth in the years to come.”

Founded in 1967 by Marjorie Guthrie, the wife of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie, Huntington’s Disease Society of America is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by HD. Woody died from HD complications when he was only 55 years old, but his legacy lives on through HDSA.
