President Donald Trump issued a message Monday extending warm wishes to Americans celebrating Diwali. The statement came as millions prepare to observe the Hindu festival of lights beginning October 20.
The festival, celebrated by Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist communities, has become increasingly prominent in U.S. public life.
“Today, I send my best wishes to every American celebrating Diwali—the ‘Festival of Lights,'” Trump stated.
The President characterized Diwali as “a timeless reminder of light’s victory over darkness.” He noted the holiday brings “families and friends together to celebrate community, draw strength from hope, and embrace a lasting spirit of renewal.”
Traditional Diwali observances include lighting oil lamps called diyas and decorative lanterns. The practice symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
“As millions of citizens light diyas and lanterns, we rejoice in the eternal truth that good will always triumph over evil,” the President added.
The message concluded with wishes for peace and prosperity: “To every American celebrating Diwali, may this observance bring abiding serenity, prosperity, hope, and peace.”
Diwali celebrations typically span five days and include prayer ceremonies, family gatherings, and festive meals. The holiday marks one of the most important celebrations in the Hindu calendar.
