One of Texas’ tastiest exports is about to get even more scrumptious with Blue Bell ice cream’s newest flavor, Gooey Butter Cake.

The flavor is exactly as it sounds: a cream cheese swirl and chunks of gooey butter cake in a cake batter ice cream base. The mouthwatering concoction was inspired by the dessert of the same, which originated in St. Louis.

According to local legend, the baked good was an accidental creation nearly 100 years ago when a baker used the wrong amount of butter in a coffee cake he was preparing. As it turned out, the gooey, pudding-like filling that resulted was a hit with patrons.

The rest is history.

“Our new Gooey Butter Cake Ice Cream is as delicious as the cake made famous in St. Louis,” said Carl Breed, vice president of sales and marketing for Blue Bell, in a press release. “Our ice cream is a great introduction if you have not tasted a gooey butter cake. There are delicious pieces of cake in each bite. And our Cake Batter Ice Cream combined with a cream cheese swirl is, as they say, the icing on the cake.”

According to the press release, the timing of the new flavor coincides with the company’s expansion into the St. Louis market.

“We are excited to bring our products to St. Louis and the surrounding cities,” said Breed.

The company advises customers to keep an eye out for another new flavor that was released in January: Cinnamon Twist, “a rich, creamy ice cream with hints of brown sugar and cinnamon combined with tasty cinnamon bun dough pieces and a cinnamon icing swirl.”

Blue Bell is known for releasing unique ice cream flavors. Last year, the iconic Texas brand released a Monster Cookie Dough flavor, which featured a vanilla ice cream base mixed with peanut butter monster cookie dough pieces, dark chocolate chunks, and chocolate covered in candy.

The company also partnered with Dr Pepper last year, another product born in the Lone Star State, to create a Dr Pepper Float ice cream flavor.
