Temperatures in Dallas-Fort Worth have consistently been over 100 degrees, but residents can cool down and celebrate national ice cream month with some of the best ice cream shops in the area.

The Dallas Observer listed some of the best places in the metroplex to grab ice cream for anyone looking to escape the heat.

The City of Dallas had four locations on the Top 10 list.

Located in Dallas at 3699 McKinney Ave. #101, Van Leeuwen has a little something for everyone. This ice cream parlor offers dairy, vegan, and gluten-free options in a cup, cone, or even in a cookie sandwich. The West Village shop is open every day from noon to 11 p.m., except for Fridays and Saturdays when it closes at midnight.

Melt Ice Creams, located at 405 N. Bishop Ave., is another well-known ice cream spot in Dallas. The shop originated in Fort Worth and has since expanded to include a location in the Bishop Arts District. In addition to its homemade waffle cones, available options include dairy, vegan, and gluten-free ice cream within the list of rotating seasonal flavors.

Farther north, Parlor’s Ice Creams is located in Suite 465 at 6465 E. Mockingbird Ln. This Dallas business uses locally sourced ingredients to create its ice cream, focusing on bringing customers’ childhoods to life.

Less than two miles away at 5321 E Mockingbird Ln. #135 is Pure Milk & Honey. The location opened in 2019 and creates soft-serve ice cream from scratch using milk from an organic Texas dairy farm and honey from a local certified bee farm.

Nearby Plano also had two shops listed in the Dallas Observer’s top 10.

Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, located at 4200 Legacy Dr., has more than 120 flavors that rotate throughout the year, with roughly 45 available daily. Although it first began in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1945, Handel’s has grown to include locations in 10 states, including five stores in the metroplex.

Found at 700 W Spring Creek Pkwy. #102, Bazaria Sweets offers several sweet, cool treats, including frozen yogurt, gelato, milkshakes, and of course, ice cream. Many of the desserts are homemade, and everything is Halal certified.

Although not specifically an ice cream shop, Casa Del Bro in Frisco also made the list of best ice cream in the area. Patrons can enjoy dinner at the Mexican restaurant and finish the meal with ice cream that is homemade each morning. After dinner, customers can leave the shop at 5444 FM 423 #100 and head to Lewisville Lake just minutes away to end the night.

No other city had more than one ice cream shop listed, but many options remain.

Tongue in Cheek Ice Cream, located at 526 W Arapaho Rd. in Richardson, is well-known for its large portions, great prices, and a self-professed “handcrafted ice cream with a side of sass.” Customers can sit down to enjoy their sweets on one of the swings located within the shop. The business recently opened a storefront in Plano.

Many customers might recognize the next ice cream shop, The Yard Milkshake Bar, from the hit show Shark Tank. This shop opened in 2011 and gained recognition when it appeared on the show in 2019. Since then, it has expanded to 23 locations across the U.S., including one at 4940 TX-121 #100 in The Colony. Customers can enjoy some of the best milkshakes in the metroplex with a menu that adds new flavors each month.

Finally, Fat Duck Ice Cream is worth tracking down for some of the best ice cream in the metroplex. This business produces its ice cream in small batches and, as a result, relies on pop-up shops to sell its inventory. The shop is most commonly found at the Deep Ellum Outdoor Market but also posts details about its upcoming locations on the Fat Duck Instagram page.
