The 21st annual Asian Film Festival of Dallas (AFFD) will return to the Angelika Film Center to feature films made by Asian and Asian-American filmmakers next weekend.
Beginning July 21, AFFD’s new leadership is bringing filmmakers face to face with festival attendees for four days of the best in Asian and Asian-American film. There will be 16 full-length feature films screened in total (12 narratives and four documentaries) and 11 short films.
This year’s edition of the AFFD will mark its first under the leadership of Executive Director Thomas Schubert and Lead Programmer Paul Theiss. The participation of Special Guest Programmers Frank Yan (co-director of programming, CineCina) and Justina Walford (programming director, Oxford Film Festival and the Billy the Kid Film Festival) has also led to innovations in this iteration of the film festival, which include a more condensed festival schedule.
Thursday’s opening night event will feature a screening of Too Cool to Kill at the Texas Theatre in Oakcliff, located at 231 W. Jefferson Blvd., Dallas 75208. The screening will be followed by an Afterglow Opening Night Party, which will include food, music, and more surprises.
On Friday, beginning at noon at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas, the festival will screen four feature films and a short film block, followed by a free spotlight reception from 7-9 p.m.
Saturday screenings start at noon and run until 10:45 p.m. There will be a red carpet for filmmakers and press in the evening.
The festival wraps up on Sunday, July 24. Screenings start at noon and run until 10:00 p.m. The final day of AFFD will include a women’s film showcase special event where attendees can enjoy free food, music, and appearances from filmmakers.
The AFFD is the second film festival to showcase Asian-produced films in the Dallas-Fort Worth area this summer. The DFW South Asian Film Festival was held in May at the Grandscape Theatres in The Colony. The three-day event debuted 33 films, three of which were world premieres.
