Apple is set to roll out its extensive iOS 17 update this fall, promising fresh features designed to enhance the iPhone user experience.

The update is available for the 2018 iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and all newer models.

“Express yourself like never before when you call or message someone. Share content in convenient new ways. And do even more with new experiences for your iPhone,” the tech giant teased on its website.

Todd Haselton from CNBC tested the beta version of the new operating system, which is available here.

His favorite new feature is StandBy, a sleeker and smarter version of your everyday alarm clock.

While StandBy is designed to work optimally with the iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on display, it’s also user-friendly with other models, with the screen easily reactivated by a simple tap.

StandBy mode turns your iPhone into a functional, personalized assistant on your bedside table. It allows your phone to display a variety of captivating clock faces with a range of personalized options.

Everything from the weather to your calendar for the day can be checked at a glance.

And it isn’t just for your bedside table: StandBy can also serve as a multipurpose companion when your phone is propped up at your desk.

Alongside a variety of useful information that might help you out while working, you can create a homey ambiance with it as well. You can set it to showcase a collection of cherished photos from your library — a feature reminiscent of smart home devices like Amazon’s Echo Show or Google’s Nest Hub.

For anyone wishing to use the StandBy feature as a bedside alarm clock, don’t worry about a bright screen keeping you up.

Borrowing the same tech as the Apple Watch Ultra, a special night mode goes into effect once the lights are turned off, either dimming the screen or turning it off. The display shows text in red font, making it easier on the eyes and reducing eye strain in darker settings.

Haselton recommends investing in a MagSafe charger stand if you want to use the new StandBy feature optimally. These devices are able to simultaneously prop up and charge iPhones.

Position your iPhone on the charging stand sideways and it will switch to StandBy mode automatically.

Alongside StandBy, the new operating system will feature updates to Messages, Phone, and FaceTime, as well as improvements to Autocorrect, Shared AirTags, and AirPods.

The new update also offers detailed app notifications — no more guessing when your UPS package might arrive.

When paired with Siri, you can ask questions like “Siri, how do I get to the nearest post office?” or issue commands like “Siri, turn off the lights.”

Users will even be able to make animated stickers from Live Photos, creating a fun new way to share content.
