The nominees for the ninety-fourth annual Academy Awards were announced on February 8. Leslie Jordan and Tracee Ellis Ross revealed the list of contenders, which included a few surprises, good and bad.
The Power of the Dog took the top spot with twelve nominations, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Ironically, in the robust list of nominations for Best Picture, the dog had no power to crack the most significant category.
Noticeably missing from the list of nominees was Lady Gaga for her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci. Gaga led for most of the award season, including nominations for lead actress at the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and BAFTA Film Awards, all preliminaries for an Oscar nomination. In contrast, the only Academy Awards nomination House of Gucci received was for makeup and hairstyling.
However, Dune received ten nominations, including for Best Picture, but failed to place in the acting and director categories.
The Best Picture category features a whopping ten nominees, including three highly nominated films, Belfast and West Side Story, which both have seven nominations, and King Richard, which has six.
Winners in twenty-three categories will receive statuettes at this year’s Academy Awards. The show has been pushed back to Sunday, March 27, and still does not have a confirmed host. Nonetheless, grab your favorite movie buffs, hors d’oeuvres, and your most fabulous dress for Hollywood’s biggest night. The Oscars air live at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
