Put your summer shorts on and keep your heavy coats handy, as you will want plenty of options for this weekend. Meteorologists predict record-breaking warm temperatures for Thursday and Friday, followed by a cold front on Saturday and Sunday.
Temperatures on Thursday are forecast to hit 81 degrees. If that happens, it will break the record high temperature of 79 degrees for December 9 that was set back in 1906 and repeated in 2020. Friday, December 10, is expected to bring temperatures that will tie or exceed the record of 84 degrees set in 1938.
CBS DFW weather forecasters say that the unusually high temperatures result from “compressional warming,” which is “air that warms as it gets squeezed.” They explained the phenomena this way: “Since we have a strong cold front on the way, there is a steeper leading edge of the colder air which, in turn, allows stronger squeezing.”
Along with the above-average temperatures, there will be plenty of wind. Weather forecasters say we can expect wind gusts from 25-35 mph over the next two days and possibly as strong as 40 mph on Friday night.
The warm temperatures and gusty SSW winds could present a fire danger in areas with dry vegetation, especially west of the metroplex.
The arrival of the cold front on Friday night could drop temperatures by as much as 30 degrees, with highs expected in the mid-50s on Saturday. A high of 61 degrees and a low temperature near freezing are forecast for Sunday.
Next week, temperatures will rise again up to 70 degrees with possible rain by the end of the week.
