This week, the Lone Star Film Festival is back in Fort Worth. The 15th annual event will run from November 11-14 at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and Downtown Cowtown at the Isis Theater.
The festival honors Fort Worth’s legacy of successful actors, directors, and filmmakers and celebrates local film-related achievements. For the first time in two years, in-person screenings of all movies at the event will be allowed. Here’s a preview of what’s to come.
The Lone Star Film Festival will present the Stephen Bruton Award to singer-songwriter Michael Martin Murphey. This award is named in honor of the famous Stephen Bruton, who wrote the score for Crazy Heart.
Murphey is an Oak Cliff native with family dating back to the founding of Texas. He’s a multiple Grammy nominee and best known for his 1975 pop radio hit “Wildfire.”
Texans Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke will both be in attendance and receive the Larry McMurty Award. The duo has worked with each other on multiple films, including Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight, and Boyhood. Linklater received a Best Director Oscar nomination for his work on Boyhood.
A new award will debut at the festival this year. The Spotlight Award will be given to Fort Worth writer, director, and producer Channing Godfrey Peoples.
She was born in Fort Worth and studied theater at Baylor University before enrolling in the School of Cinematic Arts at USC in Los Angeles. ‘Miss Juneteenth’ is her debut feature film, and it was filmed in Fort Worth in 2019.
“We are thrilled to honor Channing Godfrey Peoples for her contributions to the film industry,” said Chad Mathews, Lone Star Film Society director. “Her powerful writing and directorial style are an inspiration for filmmakers.”
The lineup of movies includes: For Bo: A Play Inspired by the Murder of Botham Jean by Officer Amber Guyger; The Marfa Tapes, with Miranda Lambert, Jack Ingram, and Jon Randall; The Humans, starring Steven Yeun; and Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America.
