In order to prevent coffee lovers from receiving a sharp surprise with their drink, hundreds of thousands of Starbucks Vanilla Frappuccino drinks are being recalled.
A distributor said those drinks could have glass in them, prompting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recall more than 25,000 cases of the drink, each of which contains 12 bottles.
Data from the FDA confirms that the recall was voluntary and initiated by the company. The recall was issued on January 28.
Bottled Starbucks Vanilla Frappuccinos are distributed by PepsiCo. A statement from the company said the drinks were distributed across the country, but did not specify where the glass had been found or where the affected cases of the drink have been sold.
“Delivering a quality experience to our consumers is our top priority and we always act with an abundance of caution whenever a potential concern is raised,” PepsiCo said in the statement, according to KIRO 7.
According to the FDA, the type of recall being issued is a Class II, which it says on its website means that the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
The bottles that were impacted had 2023 expiration dates that included March 8, May 29, June 4, and June 10.
These drinks are not typically offered at Starbucks cafes but are sold in the retail market, including by giants like Walmart, Target and Amazon.
PepsiCo previously recalled Starbucks Vanilla Espresso Triple Shot drinks in August for a similar reason, only in that instance the recall was due to the presence of metal fragments rather than glass. The FDA marked that recall a Class II as well.
