The share of Dallas-Fort Worth hospitals earning “A” grades for patient safety in the spring from the nonprofit Leapfrog Group stood at 37.5%, slightly below the percentage for Texas as a whole.
More than 2,700 acute-care hospitals in the United States, including 48 in DFW, are graded twice annually by Leapfrog and assigned letter grades. The safety grades measure 27 patient care components in order to highlight each hospital’s efforts to protect patients from preventable injury, medical errors, serious accidents and infections, according to Leapfrog.
In Texas, 40.3% of the state’s hospitals earned “A” grades. The share of hospitals in the state earning “A” grades in the fall of 2020 was 42.7%, and the state’s fall 2020 ranking was 13th among the 50 states.
Nationwide, about one-third of hospitals earned “A” grades; 24% collected “B’s”; 35%, “C’s”; 7%, “D’s”; and under 1%, “F’s.”
The Leapfrog methodology has been peer-reviewed and aims to encourage hospitals to prioritize patient safety, the analysis states.
