King’s Hawaiian has issued a voluntary recall for several pretzel products out of “an abundance of caution” for consumer safety after one of its suppliers recalled an ingredient.
The products being recalled by King’s Hawaiian, a popular bakery in business for over 70 years, are its Pretzel Slider Buns, Pretzel Hamburger Buns, and Pretzel Bites.
An ingredient used in the products came from supplier Lyons Magnus, who voluntarily recalled food, beverage, and meal replacement products due to the potential for microbial contamination from Cronobacter sakazakii and Clostridium botulinum. The Lyons Magnus recall included Organic Valley products, Oatly oat milk, and Premier protein shakes.
Cronobacter sakazakii-related infections are rare. However, vulnerable and immunocompromised people may be more susceptible to infection. The common symptoms could include fever, vomiting, and urinary tract infections.
Clostridium botulinum may cause a severe form of food poisoning. Symptoms can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains the toxin and may include “double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness.”
Botulism poisoning can cause respiratory paralysis resulting in death unless mechanical ventilation, or assistance with breathing, is provided.
While no illnesses have been associated with King Hawaiian’s recalled products, and no pathogens have been found in the products to date, the recall is still underway.
King’s Hawaiian said it plans to resume production of the recalled pretzel products once it has confirmed the safety of the ingredients and disposed of the current product.
The bakery did not recall any other products because no others were made with the Lyons Magnus ingredient.
King’s Hawaiian said that all consumers who have the recalled products should dispose of them immediately. Customers can ask questions or request replacement products by calling 877-695-4227, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
