Former Balch Springs city councilman Rev. Sammy Moon is reportedly dead from COVID-19 after contracting the virus for a second time.

The 53-year-old reverend and former Balch Springs city councilman was scheduled to get his first vaccine shot on Monday but died on Saturday after he got sick a second time with COVID-19.

Rev. Moon contracted the virus for a second time in July and was dead from it within a few days as a result of the delta variant of COVID-19.

Rev. Moon served multiple terms in the Balch Springs city council. He also started a youth ministry in his home many years ago.

“We started out with one, then we had two,” said his wife, Linda Moon. “And before you knew it, our living room was packed with 40 or 50 kids.”

“COVID might have took his flesh, but it didn’t take his spirit,” said his son, Sean Matthews. “His spirit’s with God, and I will see him again one day.”

Rev. Moon had gotten sick again from COVID-19 after contracting the virus six months after he first got infected.

“On the twentieth, he got where he could not really breathe,” Linda recalled. “Respiration went down to 45. I rushed him to the Sunnyvale hospital.”

He was scheduled to be vaccinated on Monday but died from the virus before he could get to it.

“He didn’t make it till today. Today, I ended up planning his funeral,” Linda said. “Whether it’s a vaccine or not and you’re scared of it, you better really think twice about not getting it because, let me tell you, this tore our family apart.”

Rev. Moon’s service will hold on Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. at the Christian Center of Mesquite.
