(Texas Scorecard) – In a victory for Dr. Mary Talley Bowden, the Texas Medical Board recently dismissed a case against her.
A Walgreens pharmacist reported Bowden to the TMB after she prescribed Ivermectin in late 2023. Dr. Bowden announced the outcome of the case on X, expressing gratitude to her supporters whose subscriptions helped cover her legal expenses and expand her reach.
Bowden is still contending with complaints from Houston Methodist Hospital and Texas Health Huguley Hospital for her work on behalf of patients during the pandemic. The TMB’s pursuit of Bowden in these cases has been called “bureaucratic abuse.”
As a medical practitioner, Dr. Bowden has a high public profile due to her treatment methods during the COVID-19 pandemic and her advocacy for affordable alternative treatments. Her actions upset the status quo and sparked controversy within the medical community, leading to multiple complaints and disciplinary actions by the TMB.
Bowden argues that legal and administrative actions taken against her are politically motivated and part of a broader effort by the medical lobby to suppress independent medical opinions. She’s not been alone in her fight.
State Rep. Steve Toth (R-The Woodlands) has publicly called for Gov. Greg Abbott’s intervention in Dr. Bowden’s hearings, criticizing the TMB for overreach.
After Bowden exhausted her medical insurance-provided legal funds, her attorneys agreed to work her cases pro bono.
Control, autonomy, and the right to independent medical judgment are at the center of Bowden’s fight, along with the medical lobby’s efforts to maintain control and suppress dissenting voices.
A state administrative hearing was set for earlier this year stemming chiefly from complaints of her treatment of a Tarrant County Deputy Sheriff who was admitted to Texas Health Huguley Hospital in Fort Worth. That hearing has been rescheduled for the fall.
