The following data, pulled from the Texas Department of State Health Services, provides a look into the COVID-19 virus in Texas.
The first death was recorded in the Lone Star State on March 15, 2020, in Matagorda County.
As of May 9, Texas has administered 64.4 million coronavirus tests since March 2020. The number of Texans tested remains unknown because some individuals are tested multiple times. The state’s figure excludes pending tests.
There were 566 adult COVID-19 patients in general beds in the hospital, 153 adults in ICU beds, and 46 pediatric COVID-19 inpatients as of Wednesday, May 11.
As of Wednesday, 86,673 people in Texas have died this year after testing positive for COVID-19. The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) counts deaths based on death certificates that specify COVID-19 as the cause of death, omitting deaths of people with COVID-19 who died of a different reason.
Texas reported a daily total of 2,127 new cases confirmed with PCR tests and 957 new probable cases reflected by rapid test results on Wednesday. The state also had 27 newly reported fatalities.
A county by county breakdown of COVID-19 in Texas showed that as of May 11, Harris and Dallas counties have had the highest number of confirmed cases since January 2022.
Harris County had a total of 986,904 confirmed cases and a total of 10,969 deaths, with a survival rate of 98.9%. Dallas County saw 490,448 confirmed cases and 6,770 deaths, with a survival rate of 98.6%.
For all of Texas, the survival rate of people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday was 98.4%.
Additionally, 45 Texas counties recorded no new COVID-19 cases on May 10.
As of Tuesday, 20.9 million people in Texas, or 77%, had received at least one dose of the vaccine, 17.6 million people, or 21%, were fully vaccinated, and 6.8 million people have received booster doses thus far. A total of 44.5 million doses, including booster shots, have been provided.
