The Texas Health Hospital Rockwall is set to double in size following a substantial renovation, scheduled to be completed by next summer.
The hospital will see its emergency department expanded, the addition of a cardiac catheterization lab, and the inclusion of a level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) that can facilitate 1,200 deliveries a year, or three times the current capacity.
The estimated $92.3 million project will substantially improve medical service offerings for residents of Rockwall and nearby North Texas communities. The facility services numerous counties, including Kaufman, eastern Dallas, Hunt, southern Collin, and of course, Rockwall.
Texas Health Rockwall is a joint venture between area physicians and Texas Health Resources, a faith-based nonprofit health system that serves 16 counties and over 7 million people in North Texas.
The hospital will see its footprint grow by 32,000 square feet once the project is complete. The expanded space is needed for the growing population of Rockwall County, which expanded nearly 50% between 2010 and 2021, reaching 116,381 last year.
Over 50,000 square feet of existing space will also undergo renovation. The refresh will continue the medical center’s evolution from its humble beginnings in 2007 as a small community hospital specializing in surgery.
Jason Linscott, chief operating officer and chief financial officer at the hospital, said, “Our caregivers live in these communities.”
Therefore, he explained, “We want to provide the best care for our neighbors, friends, and family members. This expansion allows us to bring greater access to medical services to families living east of Lake Ray Hubbard.”
Expectant mothers will welcome the addition of two private rooms to the new NICU. A separate room will also be opened for parents needing a place to rest overnight.
In addition, the hospital will gain 10 new labor and delivery rooms, up from the current seven. Also added will be two C-section rooms, up from one, and 24 postpartum rooms, resulting in over double the current number.
The intensive care unit (ICU) will also expand to 12 beds, twice the existing capacity. Emergency room beds will double from seven to 14, in addition to numerous other hospital improvements and additions.
Once complete, the refreshed medical facility will enjoy a calmer atmosphere as part of the makeover. Visitors to the new NICU will notice soothing, light blue and gray colors throughout the refreshed spaces.
“We are growing Texas Health Rockwall to better serve our patients and their families,” said the hospital’s president, Cindy Perrin.
“We are especially proud of our new NICU, which will help meet the health needs of our tiniest patients closer to their homes. Proximity to a hospital that can address critical care needs will bring greater comfort to families living in the communities we serve.”
