Mattie Parker has been elected to serve as the next mayor of Fort Worth, replacing Betsy Price.

Parker, who is 37, will be one of the youngest mayors for a major American city. Parker defeated her opponent Deborah Peoples by a decent margin, receiving 53.6% of the vote in comparison to Peoples’ 46.4%.

In a recent interview, Parker said, “I take the torch with respect and appreciation for the leaders before me and excitement for what is to come. From the very beginning of the election, comments were made about how someone my age or a mom with young kids couldn’t possibly be mayor, and my response was always – watch me!”

In her victory speech, Parker also pledged to work for the city to earn respect from all Fort Worth residents.

Though a once-crowded field of 10 candidates in the general election, Parker and Peoples were established frontrunners, receiving over 20,000 votes each in the first election.

Though Peoples conceded before 10 p.m. on election night, she renewed her dedication to public service.

“I will continue the fight to give more communities a seat at the table, expand prosperity to all our neighborhoods and elect leaders who truly represent all the people,” Peoples said.

Parker received numerous endorsements from elected officials, including Gov. Greg Abbott, but she also emphasized her gratitude for her constituents.

“I am proud to have received endorsements from amazing current and past leaders, but I am equally as proud of the hundreds of endorsements I received from the people in Fort Worth who I simply do day-to-day life with,” she said.

Among the issues she wishes to focus on during her time as mayor, Parker hopes to foster growth and innovation in the local economy, unifying communities and voters, and improving quality of life throughout the city.

“I genuinely love serving this community,” Parker said when asked about how she would celebrate her win. “I cannot think of a better celebration than hitting the ground running day one!”
