González will ‘proudly wear the mantle’ of Texas Monthly’s ‘Bull of the Brazos’

Rep. Jessica González (D-Dallas) was named Texas Monthly’s 2021 “Bull on the Brazos” for bringing national attention to the voting rights battle in the Lone Star State.

The magazine ranks the best and worst legislators each year with the Bull of the Brazos distinction essentially going to a legislator, who according to the publication, doesn’t fall nearly into the category of best or worse but is in a class on their own.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to fight for District 104, and all Texans, in the Texas House,” González wrote in a June 21 Twitter post. “As long as there needs to be a ‘Bull of the Brazos’ fighting for your right to vote, I will proudly wear the mantle.”

González, a two-term lawmaker, helped to ensure that a proposed bill limiting vote-by-mail, early voting hours and local voting options didn’t pass during this year’s legislative session.

“When it came time to debate bills that restricted your right to vote, I organized opposition, and I fought back,” González tweeted. “I got loud, and I raised my voice on behalf of the millions of Texans who were silenced during the process.”

González said she is committed to taking a stand on issues that matter to her and refuses to be silenced.

“When our democracy is at stake, I’ll be there ready to fight and I won’t hesitate to do what’s necessary,” she tweeted.

González represents District 104, which covers some of west Dallas County.

She’s a practicing personal injury attorney who owns and operates her own law firm, Gandara & González, PLLC.

González served as vice-chair of the House Committee on Elections.

As part of her dedication to protecting voters’ rights, she served on former President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign as the Nevada voter protection director.
