The Texas House on Thursday passed a bill to ban sexually explicit books and other materials from school libraries.
The bill now heads to the Senate.
The legislation was a priority for Speaker Dade Phelan, who said sexually explicit books would be taken off shelves and ones with sexual references would require parental consent,
House Bill 900 passed on a 95-52 vote.
In an interview with Texas Scorecard, the bill’s sponsor, State Rep. Jared Patterson, said the legislation was intended to provide uniform standards statewide.
“This bill does one thing and one thing only: restricts explicit books from unaccompanied minors and Texas public schools,” Patterson told Texas Scorecard.
