U.S. Rep. Colin Allred (D-Dallas) said that President Joe Biden should extend the moratorium on evictions as many people still need it while recovering from the coronavirus pandemic.
“The eviction moratorium is a lifeline and allowed so many families relief during the pandemic. As we work to recover, we must help those in need get back on their feet. Glad to see the Biden administration extend it until July 31,” Allred said in a Twitter post.
The U.S. Supreme Court turned down an emergency appeal by landlords and real-estate firms to resume evictions, according to court documents.
The ruling was the latest in the moratorium dispute.
The CDC imposed the moratorium in September after a similar moratorium enacted by Congress had expired, as described in a SCOTUS blog post.
A CBS News article details that the justices ruled 5-4 to extend the moratorium through the end of July.
Biden said that he supports expanding the moratorium. In a post on the White House website, the Biden-Harris administration announced several steps to keep people in their homes.
The administration is taking action to stabilize homeowners and support a return to a more stable housing market, including by extending the foreclosure moratorium for federally-backed mortgages until July 31, as stated on the White House website.
To help, the American Rescue Plan allocated an additional $21.5 billion for Emergency Rental Assistance, the White House post states.
This money is in addition to the $25 billion allocated under the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, the White House reported.
This brings “the total amount of ERA available to more than $46 billion and creating an economic and moral imperative for state and local governments to rise to the challenge of building a new infrastructure for getting emergency rental assistance to vulnerable renters and landlords,” according to the Biden-Harris administration.
