Actor Matthew McConaughey is allegedly considering running for Texas Governor. The Dallas Buyers Club actor is contemplating a run against current Governor Gregg Abbott in 2022 if he feels he can lead in a helpful way.
While speaking on the Sway podcast hosted by Kara Swisher of the New York Times, the 51-year-old expressed his thoughts about the current political landscape, calling it a “broken business.”
McConaughey asked, “Is politics an embassy for me to be of the most [useful] to myself, to my family, to the most amount of people in my life moving forward?”
McConaughey also directly addressed his lack of political experience, articulating that he has been in the movie-making business for decades. However, the actor has a long list of charities and causes he has dedicated his time to and does not feel his inexperience would hinder him.
“I could arguably have more influence as an informal leader than a formal leader,” McConaughey stated.
McConaughey also expressed his point of view regarding the pandemic that he is in support of a mask mandate. When the subject of Texas’ controversial abortion laws came up, McConaughey did not have a clear-cut response or a solution but shared his disapproval.
He said, “We’ve been trying to figure out that, and how to play God with that situation, since the beginning.”
The actor discussed his disapproval of the lack of exceptions for rape or incest in the Heartbeat Act.
While most of his interview centered around possibly running for governor, McConaughey did make time to talk about his personal life and how he thinks he will leave this world after his father predicted the manner of his death.
“I got a feeling that I’m going down as part of the food chain,” McConaughey shared. “It was— the dream was gators.”
