A violent standoff in Houston started at nearly 3 p.m. on January 27, when Houston Police responded to a family disturbance call within the 1500 block of Tralle Street.

Thirty-one-year-old Roland Caballero drove off from the scene after seeing police. The suspect crashed at McGowen and Hutchins. He instantly began shooting at police, who returned fire.

Caballero then carjacked the driver of a white Mercedez Benz at gunpoint, leading officers on another chase that ended at the 1800 block of Lockwood where Caballero barricaded himself within a residence for several hours.

He was taken into custody by police around 7:45 p.m.

The shot officers are identified as 35-year-old Officer Gadson, 32-year-old Officer Hayden, and 28-year-old Officer Alvarez.

Authorities said one of the officers was shot in the arm. The second was shot in the leg. The third was shot in the foot.

All of the wounded officers received medical treatment at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Caballero was shot in the neck and hospitalized.

In a January 27 evening briefing, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner commented on the inherent danger of being a police officer.

Mayor Turner also stated that the injured officers are in “good spirits” and “talkative.”
