Now is the time for Texans to take advantage of the state-wide sales tax holiday to purchase water-efficient and ENERGY STAR appliances and products.

Established by the Texas Legislature, the May 27-29 tax holiday provides an excellent opportunity for consumers to save on specific water and energy-efficient products, according to a news release from the Texas Comptroller.

During the designated period, certain eligible items are tax-exempt. The purpose of the tax holiday is to promote water and energy conservation, according to Texas Comptroller Glen Hegar.

“Older, inefficient appliances and outdated water systems can put a tremendous strain on our power grids and water supplies,” said Hegar in the news release.

“By taking advantage of these sales tax holidays, Texans can make upgrades that will help alleviate those pressures and lower their utility bills — while saving money on state and local sales taxes.”

It is estimated that the tax holiday will collectively save consumers an impressive $14.3 million in sales tax.

The following ENERGY STAR-labeled appliances and household equipment can be bought, rented, or leased tax-free:

  • Air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less
  • Refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less
  • Ceiling fans
  • Incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Dehumidifiers

Opting for ENERGY STAR-certified products allows consumers to lower their energy consumption, reduce utility bills, and play a part in safeguarding the environment.

In addition, any products bearing the WaterSense label can be purchased tax-free this weekend. This would include items such as sinks, faucets, toilets, urinals, shower heads, sprinklers, irrigation controllers, and more. Also, certain water-conserving products for the homeowner’s yard or garden qualify for tax exemption. Items such as soaker hoses, mulch, plants, trees, grasses, rain barrels, soil, and compost are eligible.

These tax holidays serve as a reminder of Texas’ commitment to promoting sustainability and responsible resource management.

Texans are encouraged to take advantage of this limited-time opportunity to make environmentally conscious choices while enjoying the benefits of reduced sales tax.
