The University of North Texas has vowed not to raise tuition for the seventh year in a row, followed by a unanimous vote from the UNT System Board of Regents. No schools in the UNT system will raise tuition for the 2023 Fiscal Year, WFAA reported.
UNT System Chancellor Dr. Michael R. Williams said the tuition for a University of North Texas campus had not been raised since 2016.
“The UNT System is dedicated to transforming the value proposition of higher education and is laser-focused on our students and their families, their experience, learning, and lifetime success,” Williams told WFAA.
Michelle Hale, who recently moved her daughter to the UNT campus in Denton, shared that stable tuition has been helpful to her entire family. Hale added that amid rising costs in other places, it is beneficial to know what the cost of fees and tuition will be.
“It’s very helpful because the cost of everything else is going up,” she told WFAA.
She said she appreciated “the fact that we know that at least for the next year, we know what to expect, as far as tuition and fees. If everything else fluctuates, we know we can at least count on that staying the same.”
Tony Tate, who moved his son Garrison Tate to the UNT Denton campus as well, shared that the tuition was one of the reasons his son chose the school. Tate added that his son also received a UNT scholarship.
“All that combined makes the cost pretty reasonable for us. He’s really into guitar, and we know they have a good music program,” he told WFAA.
Williams said UNT schools strive to remain accessible to those seeking an education.
“The UNT System will continue to demonstrate fiscal stewardship by identifying cost-savings to ensure no unnecessary financial burden is being passed on to our students and their families,” Williams told WFAA.
College Board reported that across the nation, public university tuition went up 1.2% in the fall of 2020. In the fall of 2021, tuition increased by around 1.6%.
