A Dallas ISD school student apparently brought a gun onto their campus Friday, but luckily, campus staff safely secured the weapon before anyone could get hurt.

The incident occurred at Solar Preparatory School for Boys in the John F. Kennedy Learning Center. The student’s age and grade are currently unclear.

“As part of our long-term safety plan, we will implement new security measures starting Monday, to include metal detectors for sixth through eighth grade. Additionally, we will perform backpack checks for scholars in third grade and up,” Principal Derek Thomas wrote in a letter to parents, according to NBC 5 DFW.

Solar Preparatory School for Boys operates as both an elementary school and middle school, serving students in grades K-8.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, an elementary school managed to get a firearm onto campus in October 2022. Unlike in last week’s incident, the student discharged the gun on campus. No one was injured, thankfully.

Previous polling conducted by The Dallas Express suggests that many parents in the district believe the school system suffers from mismanagement.

Here is some of what Fox News KDFW reported on what happened on Friday and efforts to improve security:

The Dallas Independent School District is stepping up security measures at one school after a gun was found on campus.

According to a letter sent to parents, the gun was confiscated from a student on Friday morning at Solar Preparatory School for Boys.

Another student reportedly told someone at the school about the weapon. School administrators were then able to “quickly and safely recover” it.

No one was hurt.

Dallas ISD said the student will be disciplined accordingly.

The district is also reminding parents that safety starts at home. Any weapons should be kept unloaded and in a secure location.
