A McKinney Independent School District employee faces charges after authorities discovered narcotics in his vehicle during a routine safety check at McKinney Boyd High School.
Local police conducted the sweep on Monday, when a drug-detection dog alerted on the vehicle, prompting a search that led to the arrest, Fox 4 reported.
Christopher Hawkins, 27, was booked into the Collin County jail. Officials have not disclosed the exact charges.
Hawkins, a first-year science teacher and coach for football and baseball, completed the district’s standard hiring process and cleared background checks, according to McKinney ISD.
The district placed him on leave while the investigation continues and notified the State Board of Educator Certification.
“This situation is unexpected and deeply disappointing, but we remain committed to transparency and to maintaining a safe environment for our students,” the district wrote in a letter to parents. “We understand that news like this can be concerning, and we want to reassure you that we will continue to follow all district procedures and work closely with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation.”
