The HPISD Board of Trustees recognized students at its June 8 meeting for state academic and athletic accomplishments.

Boys golf celebrated for state championship title and third-place finish

Trustees congratulated the Highland Park High School golf program at the June meeting for an exceptional season that ended in a first and third place wins at UIL 5A Boys State Golf Tournament. This is the fourth consecutive team title for HP and the 22nd overall. The Blue team, comprised of Hudson Weibel, Pierce Johnson, Key Coker, Christian Clark and Joe Stover won the state championship title and the Gold team, with Thompson Huthnance, Nick Visconsi, Preston Cooper, Martin Kemp and Mack Duvall finished third.  Individually, sophomore Preston Cooper won the 5A state title and senior captains Hudson Weibel and Thompson Huthnance tied for third.

Tennis doubles teams congratulated for second-place finish at state tournament

The Board commended two Scots doubles teams for their silver medal performances at UIL 5A State Tennis Championship Tournament. The mixed doubles team of Ray Saalfield and Isabella McElfresh, and the girls doubles team of Hayden Bethea and Cambelle Henderson both finished the season as state runners-up.

Student honored for placing third in state debate contest

Highland Park High School junior Evan Wang was recognized by HPISD Trustees for finishing third in Lincoln Douglas debate at the 5A UIL Academic State Speech and Debate tournament May 26. The speech and debate contests were the final UIL academic competitions of the year. Students competing in the Lincoln Douglas debate perfect their skills in research to formulate ideas into a formal argument for a persuasive presentation. The event encompasses several academic areas including philosophy, history, social science, rhetoric, communication ethics and political science
