With schools in North Texas set to resume in-person learning, Stephanie Tassakis and her daughter Ella are on a mission to help families in need obtain school supplies. Tassakis and her daughter spent their summer on their front porch, waving signs asking people to donate school supplies and uniforms for needy families.

“No child should go to school feeling uncomfortable or feeling like they’re left out because they don’t have the right supplies,” Tassakis said.

Tassakis’ daughter Ella also came up with the idea of selling lemonade, with all the proceeds going towards helping other kids go back to school. Ella said she feels bad that the children of needy families can’t get basic supplies, and that is why she is doing as much as she can.

Tassakis said she came up with the idea after talking to some parents in Garland and noticed that many couldn’t afford school supplies for their children due to the financial impact of the pandemic. She and her daughter are trying to help more than 40 families with the money raised. Tassakis also said she’s hoping more people would feel generous and decide to donate.

“We want every kid to go to school with confidence in their new year, in their education, and they’re going to be able to have a good year this year,” she said.
