Four Dallas ISD police officers have received Life Saving Awards for their heroic actions that prevented tragedies on district grounds.
The department honored Officers Sergio Pacheco, Daniel Espinoza, Kimberly Gonzalez, and Sergeant Derrick Anderson at a back-to-school event. The recognitions highlight the critical role school police play in protecting students and community members beyond typical campus security duties.
Officer Pacheco earned his award for actions in June when he spotted a vehicle driving the wrong way. The driver ran a stop sign and crashed into Pacheco’s patrol car before becoming unresponsive.
Pacheco immediately called for medical help. Emergency responders transported the driver to the hospital.
“His decisive actions exemplify outstanding law enforcement service, directly contributing to saving a life and possibly saving lives of others,” said Albert Martinez, chief of police of the Dallas ISD Police Department.
In July, officers Espinoza and Gonzalez, along with Sergeant Anderson, discovered an unconscious man who had allegedly overdosed on drugs. The officers successfully revived him and maintained scene safety until paramedics arrived.
“There is no doubt that these officers’ alertness, rapid intervention, and calm under pressure directly contributed to saving the life of this individual on this day,” Martinez said.
The awards ceremony took place at Wilmer-Hutchins High School during the department’s annual back-to-school kickoff. Chief Martinez used the occasion to announce new initiatives for the coming academic year.
The department will launch a dedicated traffic unit to increase enforcement in school zones. All officers will also receive training and certification in mental health crisis response.
“You all do a great job serving our community and our schools,” Martinez told his officers. “I hope you got a lot of rest this summer, because it’s time to get back to work.”
Fifteen additional officers and staff members received commendations during the event. The list included detectives, patrol officers, campus safety officers, and emergency management personnel who demonstrated exceptional service.
