Dallas ISD police launched the district’s first dedicated traffic enforcement unit this week, deploying specially trained officers to monitor school zones during peak hours.

The new unit aims to protect students and families as thousands of vehicles converge on campuses during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup times.

Officers wearing distinctive red uniforms will patrol near schools starting at 6:30 a.m. and returning for afternoon dismissal.

“We’re going to be watching for speeding, distracted drivers on cell phones, seatbelt violations, and ensuring proper use of child safety seats,” said Manuel Murillo, a lieutenant with Dallas ISD Police.

The traffic unit represents a significant safety upgrade for the district. School zones see anywhere from 200 to over 1,000 people arriving simultaneously during peak times, Murillo noted.

Beyond monitoring vehicles, officers will watch for unsafe pedestrian behavior and ensure drivers yield at crosswalks. They will also enforce bus stop regulations, including mandatory stops when buses display flashing red lights and extended stop signs.

Murillo emphasized that child safety seat requirements depend on height rather than age alone. He encouraged parents to verify that their elementary-age children are properly secured, including those who may still need booster seats.

“With the new school year, there will be a significant increase in traffic,” Murillo said. “Everyone is trying to get to the same place at the same time, so patience and awareness are key.”

The department posts real-time updates on X and Instagram for families seeking traffic information.
