A 37-year-old science teacher has resigned from her position after a 12-year-old boy suffered burns during a science experiment using hand sanitizer.

The student sustained the injuries on April 1 when an experiment performed in front of the class went wrong. The teacher put hand sanitizer in the boy’s hands before lighting it to see if it would burn. Allegedly, this was done numerous times throughout the day with other students without incident, according to police; however, the student in question may have sustained third-degree burns on his hands.

Granbury Independent School District tweeted on Tuesday that the teacher “resigned and is no longer an employee of the school district.”

The district also told WFAA, “Given that this is a personnel matter and we must follow federal requirements regarding student confidentially, we are not able to provide more details. The matter has been under investigation by the City of Granbury fire inspector/investigator.”

Campus officials have turned the incident over to law enforcement, who will conduct a thorough investigation into what occurred. The former teacher may face criminal charges.
