Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has secured a court order requiring the Austin Independent School District to halt any teaching of critical race theory.
The agreement announced on September 15 mandates district-wide compliance with state law banning what Paxton calls a “radical, anti-American set of teachings.”
Under the agreed order, AISD’s superintendent must ensure all principals and staff follow the Texas Education Code’s prohibition on critical race theory. The district cannot advise parents or students on circumventing the ban.
All compliance inquiries must now go through a designated administrator. The order applies to every school in the district.
“Critical race theory is anti-American propaganda and in no world will I allow the woke indoctrination of Texas children,” Paxton said in a press release. “While this order is an important step forward, I want to make clear to any school district considering any breach of this law: we will be watching.”
The attorney general added: “My office stands ready to defend Texas law and the rights of parents against any unlawful implementation of CRT.”
The legal action followed an investigation revealing AISD officials had made statements about using materials from the banned 1619 Project. Staff were allegedly being instructed on “ways to get around” the state’s CRT ban.
District officials have not yet responded publicly to the agreement.
