The parents of 18-year-old University of Texas at Austin freshman Sawyer Lee Updike filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Sigma Chi’s Alpha Nu chapter, NewsRadio 1080 KRLD reported.

Allegations of months of violent hazing in 2023, including assaults with a fishhook and staple gun, cigarette burns, beatings, forced cocaine use, and threats; many of these incidents were recorded.

On January 16, 2024, the first day of the spring semester, Updike was allegedly given cocaine and psilocybin at the fraternity house and died by suicide later that day; Sigma Chi’s national organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
