A federal magistrate has ordered the Justice Department to turn over grand jury materials and other evidence in the criminal case against former FBI Director James Comey, warning that prosecutors appeared to “indict first and investigate later.”
Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick set a Thursday deadline and directed that Comey’s defense receive access to materials seized from his associate, Columbia Law Professor Daniel Richman, according to the Associated Press.
Comey is charged with lying to Congress in 2020 about authorizing anonymous sources. He has pleaded not guilty and claims the prosecution is politically motivated.
Prosecutors argue the case is legitimate and not influenced by President Donald Trump’s prior public calls for charges.
