Rep. Tim Kennedy (D-Buffalo) is advancing the federal “Protect Our Letter Carriers” Act to stiffen penalties for assaults on U.S. Postal Service carriers after at least five Western New York attacks targeting carriers’ universal arrow keys, which open mail and collection boxes.

Backers, including mail carrier unions, are also pushing for electronic locks, WBEN reported. The bipartisan effort follows gunpoint robberies in Buffalo and a threatened carrier in Niagara Falls, with union leaders citing both physical and mental injuries.
