WIRED reported that Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced major DNS resolution failures early Monday in its US-EAST-1 region, disrupting access to Amazon.com, Ring, Alexa, WhatsApp, ChatGPT, Venmo, Epic Games, and several UK government websites.
AWS traced the problem to its DynamoDB API endpoint resolution. The company applied mitigations by 5:22 a.m. ET and said core issues were resolved by 6:35 a.m. ET.
The outage underscored the internet’s dependence on centralized cloud infrastructure, showing how a single point of failure can trigger cascading disruptions across industries. AWS said it found no evidence of malicious activity.
