Legendary Dallas Cowboys photographer Ron St. Angelo joined an ESPN conversation on one of the most consequential trades in NFL history: the deal that sent Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings and helped lay the foundation for the Cowboys’ 1990s dynasty.
St. Angelo appeared on The Greatest Game Podcast with Jeremy Schaap, alongside voices including Jimmy Johnson, Darren Woodson, and Norm Hitzges, to revisit the blockbuster trade and the era that followed.
In the latest Dallas Express Sports Network segment, St. Angelo adds his perspective through the lens of someone who documented the Cowboys up close during one of the franchise’s most important transitions.
Walker arrived in Dallas after the USFL folded, pairing briefly with Tony Dorsett in a rare Heisman Trophy-winning backfield. St. Angelo captured that moment for an NFL GameDay magazine cover before the Cowboys eventually made the franchise-altering decision to trade Walker.
The move shocked the NFL at the time, but it became one of the defining decisions of the Jimmy Johnson era. Dallas went 1-15 in 1989, the season Walker was traded. Three years later, the Cowboys were Super Bowl champions.
The DXSN segment features St. Angelo’s photography, behind-the-scenes memories, and reflections on the players, coaches, and moments that shaped the Cowboys’ rise.
