A new statewide poll found that former President Donald Trump leads President Joe Biden in Texas by eight points.
The survey, which was conducted by the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin, was answered by 1,200 registered voters and had a 2.83% margin of error.
The poll indicated that Trump was the only Republican candidate to lead Biden in Texas outside the margin of error.
In a head-to-head matchup, Trump would secure 45% of the voting public’s support, while Biden would only receive 37%, according to the poll. Some 13% of respondents said they would support someone else, and 5% said they “haven’t thought about it enough to have an opinion.”
Other hopefuls for the Republican presidential nomination all struggled to keep up with Biden in a direct competition. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis polled 39% to Biden’s 38%, while Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, and Mike Pence all trailed Biden by a significant amount.
Of all the Republican candidates, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was the most unpopular with Texas Republicans, with 46% saying they would “definitely not support” him. Former Vice President Mike Pence came in a close second, with 42% saying the same.
Still, Biden’s popularity with his base has cratered, with even a majority of Democratic voters (52%) saying he would be too old to be president come 2025. Additionally, 81% of both independents and Republicans registered the same opinion, according to the poll.
Only 19% of Republicans consider Trump to be too old to serve as president again, according to the poll, with 39% of independents and 58% of Democrats agreeing.
Ultimately, Texans said they were unsatisfied with how the country is currently being run, with 71% saying the nation is on the wrong track.
When asked if Biden had taken actions that would justify him being impeached and removed from office, 42% of Texas voters said yes, 37% said no, and 22% did not have an opinion.
Reacting to the poll, Gulf Coast Young Republican President Spencer Lewis told The Dallas Express, “Our sense is that voters respect the other candidates in the race but that this poll reflects the unique circumstances of the politicized indictments issued against President Trump.”
“We believe the polls reflect an ‘only Trump’ sentiment that has hardened in the GOP primary base as Joe Biden’s deeply unpopular administration seeks to sideline the GOP’s presumptive nominee,” he added.
