A woman will soon be extradited to Texas, where she will face charges related to the fatal shooting of another woman in her Fort Worth home earlier this month.

Fort Worth police reported that 26-year-old Susan Dean had been taken into police custody out of state on the evening of December 12. This was nearly a week after her alleged victim, 26-year-old Jovonna Renee Britt, died at John Peter Smith Hospital due to complications resulting from being shot in the neck.

Britt had been shot inside her apartment located in the 7500 block of Oakline Trail in Fort Worth on December 1 at around 9:40 p.m. Dean and Britt had allegedly been arguing when the former reportedly fired a gun at the latter.

As of the end of September 2023, there had been 65 murders committed in Fort Worth, according to the Fort Worth PD’s crime report. Published quarterly, the report suggests that the murder rate will have gone down by just over 20% by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Dallas has seen a steady increase in the number of homicides logged citywide despite DPD’s efforts to curb violent crime. As of December 14, 231 murders had been reported for a year-over-year rise of 11.6%, according to the City’s crime analytics dashboard.

The neighboring cities also show considerable contrast in the crime rates seen in their city centers. While Downtown Dallas is also notorious for its vagrancy, it also sees 14 times more thefts and six times more assaults than the downtown area of Fort Worth, according to a study by the Metroplex Civic and Business Association. While both cities’ police departments have been struggling with officer deficits, Fort Worth has a dedicated police unit monitoring its city center alongside private security guards.
