Police have arrested two people at an area high school after a gunshot rang out on campus.

The Irving Police department responded to a shooting call at Nimitz High School in Irving around noon on Monday, December 19.

A fight occurred at the high school, and someone pulled a gun out during the fight, firing a shot in the parking lot, according to police. No one was hit by the shot that was fired, police said.

The school was placed on lockdown, and the police were called to the school.

Irving police stopped a car, and two people were taken into custody, police said.

Police have not released any more information regarding the two people arrested, including whether they were students at the school and their ages.

Police increased their presence for the remainder of the school day, and students were still scheduled to be let out at the regular time on Monday, according to police.

The school sent out a statement to parents, assuring them that students were safe.

“While the incident is still under investigation, we can assure you that the incident occurred outside of the school building, and again, all students and staff are safe,” the statement read.

Christmas break begins on Thursday for the district, according to the district’s calendar.

This incident comes amid rising violent crime in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and growing concern among citizens about the safety of local communities.
