Border Patrol agents apprehended a previously deported sex offender near Brownsville on Wednesday morning.
Agents arrested 53-year-old Jose Guadalupe Perez-Garza on May 21, according to a Border Patrol press release. The suspect is a Mexican national, and he has been referred for prosecution for illegal reentry after deportation.
“This arrest highlights the importance of our border security mission,” said Gloria Chavez, chief patrol agent of the Rio Grande Valley sector, in the release.
During processing at the Fort Brown Station near Brownsville, agents found Perez-Garza has an “extensive criminal history” in America. After being convicted in 2022 for illegally reentering the U.S. after being deported, He served 41 months in federal prison. Perez-Garza was most recently removed in January 2025.
The suspect was convicted of felony aggravated sexual assault of a child in 2013 and was sentenced to 10 years of confinement. According to the Texas sex offender registry, Perez-Garza previously assaulted a 14-year-old girl.
The Border Patrol recently intercepted multiple criminal operations at the Texas-Mexico border. As The Dallas Express reported, Customs and Border Protection announced on May 15 that it had seized 191 pounds of methamphetamine, valued at more than $1.7 million. CBP announced on May 19 that agents seized $989,000 in cocaine near Hidalgo and $956,000 in cocaine near Rio Grande City.
“Our agents remain vigilant in their efforts to prevent dangerous criminals from entering our communities,” Chavez said in the release.
