A toddler died after an early Sunday shooting at a South Oak Cliff apartment complex, prompting a Dallas police investigation.

Officers responded around 1 a.m. on October 11 to the Oakwood Place Apartments on Wadsworth Drive, where they found the child with a gunshot wound inside an apartment, according to police information reported by FOX 4.

Officers began lifesaving measures while awaiting paramedics. Emergency responders took the toddler to a hospital, where the child died shortly after arriving.

Police questioned the child’s mother and notified Child Protective Services. Authorities have not identified who fired the gun or explained how the shooting unfolded.

In a separate case earlier this year, a 2-year-old child died after an April 23 shooting in the 1700 block of Hemphill Drive in East Oak Cliff. The Dallas Express covered that investigation and the subsequent arrests.

Dallas police later announced a charge of making a firearm accessible to a child resulting in death or serious bodily injury against one man in that case.
