Three Dallas firefighters were injured and one woman was arrested following a fire on Thursday, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue.
Just after midnight, firefighters were dispatched to a house fire in the 2200 block of Mail Avenue close to Dallas Love Field. The crew arrived to find flames coming from the side of the house and smoke billowing out the front.
The resident of the house was able to escape safely. When firefighters entered, they were overpowered by the intense heat, according to Jason Evans, the public relations officer for Dallas Fire-Rescue. As they quickly attempted to exit the home, one of the firefighters became disoriented and called a Mayday, which prompted a second-alarm response.
“Thankfully, that team of firefighters managed to self-extricate, with the assistance of additional firefighters already on scene, and the Mayday response was canceled,” stated an email to WFAA.
Dallas Fire-Rescue extinguished the fire in a little more than 30 minutes.
The fire resulted in the injuries of three firefighters, who had to be hospitalized. One firefighter experienced burns to the ears, while another two sustained burns across 5% and 10% of their bodies, respectively.
None of the injuries sustained by the firefighters appeared to be life-threatening, according to officials. The firefighter who had burns to his ears has since been discharged, and the other two are recovering.
Diana Marie Davila, 29, who was in the home when the fire began, allegedly admitted to starting it “by use of a cigarette, in the bedroom which was located where flames could be seen upon arrival,” according to investigators.
She was taken to Lew Sterrett Justice Center and charged with first Degree Felony Arson.
It was not immediately clear if Davila told investigators she had started the fire on purpose or if she has legal representation.
