A Texas man will spend life in prison without parole after a jury convicted him of a 2017 cold case murder that went unsolved for six years.
Kerrico Carr, 44, was found guilty of capital murder for killing 30-year-old Gregory Milton in a Frisco neighborhood on June 30, 2017.
The case broke open in 2023 when new detectives uncovered damning evidence. They found recorded jail calls where Carr admitted to going to collect money from Milton that day.
Witnesses saw two men arrive in a grayish-brown van and approach the victim’s car outside his house. Milton ran between houses when he spotted them.
A masked passenger chased him and shot him in the back. Both suspects fled in the van.
The victim’s girlfriend and family told police he owed Carr money. They said Carr had been sending threatening messages.
Police initially arrested a man identified by witnesses in a police lineup, but later released him when it was verified that he was nowhere near the crime scene at the time of the murder. The case went cold until 2023.
New detectives working the cold case tracked down the van’s driver, who testified that Carr pulled the trigger. Cell phone records and witness statements also placed Carr at the scene.
“Violent criminals should know that there is no statute of limitations for murder, and police and prosecutors never forget. This conviction brings delayed justice to a grieving family and ensures a violent murderer will never be free to walk our streets again,” District Attorney Greg Willis said after sentencing.
Carr was already serving time in Arkansas for conspiracy to commit identity theft when prosecutors charged him with Milton’s murder.
