Dallas police arrested 17-year-old Ashton Hill on an evidence-tampering charge while investigating a West Oak Cliff shooting that killed one man and wounded another early Friday.
The Dallas Police Department has not announced any shooting-related charge against Hill. The department identified the shooter only as an unknown suspect in its initial account of the case.
Officers responded at approximately 1:35 a.m. Friday to a shooting call in the 4100 block of South Cockrell Hill Road. A preliminary investigation found that the unknown suspect shot both men.
One man died at the scene. A private vehicle took the second victim to a hospital, and DPD described him as stable when the department published its initial account Friday. Police did not identify either victim in the release.
The shooting came less than two weeks after Dallas police found 20-year-old Ricky Johnson fatally shot in South Dallas. Police had not announced an arrest in that separate case as of August 9, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
Teen faces evidence-tampering charge
As the investigation continued, officers arrested Hill and charged the teen with tampering with or fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair, DPD said.
The department did not say what evidence Hill allegedly tampered with, how the teen allegedly handled it or whether Hill knew either victim.
Under Texas law, a person commits evidence tampering by altering, destroying or concealing evidence with intent to impair it during a pending or ongoing investigation. The statute also covers making, presenting or using false evidence with intent to affect an investigation or proceeding.
The charge is an allegation. Hill is presumed innocent unless proved guilty.
Police seek information
As of Saturday afternoon, DPD had not announced an arrest in the killing or released a motive or description of the shooter.
The department is investigating the shooting under case number 122701-2026. Anyone with information can contact Detective R. Kramer, badge No. 7967, at 214-671-3608 or email.
