A North Texas teen was arrested after authorities uncovered a suspected plan to attack local Independence Day celebrations, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced.
Kevin Hunt, 18, from Canyon, Texas, was detained on July 2 following a joint investigation by DPS, the Amarillo Police Department, and the Randall County District Attorney’s Office.
Hunt was taken into custody on an emergency mental health warrant after investigators observed concerning social media activity, including posts indicating self-harm and an apparent desire to carry out a mass casualty attack.
“Because of the strong partnerships DPS has with other law enforcement agencies at the local and federal level, the horrific plans we believe this individual had planned, never materialized,” said DPS Northwest Texas Region Chief Joe Longway. “It’s not just law enforcement officers who can help thwart potential attacks—so can the public. By staying alert and speaking up when you see something suspicious, you can save lives.”
Authorities became alarmed by Hunt’s ongoing grievances and violent ideations on social media, which suggested the potential for a targeted attack. When he was later observed conducting activities consistent with site surveillance ahead of local festivities, DPS acted swiftly.
A search warrant executed at Hunt’s residence led to the seizure of materials used to make explosive devices, multiple firearms, and several hundred rounds of ammunition. On July 11, Hunt was charged with possession of components of explosives.
The ongoing investigation highlights the effectiveness of the Texas Behavioral Threat Assessment Intervention and Prevention Program Strategy, implemented under Gov. Greg Abbott’s directive to enhance anti-terrorism resources statewide.
