A 19-year-old accused of fatally shooting a man in Dallas earlier this year was arrested Tuesday following a witness identifying him after hosting the suspect in her apartment.
Dallas Police Department arrested Charles Barber Jr. for the shooting death of Alan Bates.
Dallas police said officers responded to a shooting call at the 3000 block of East Ledbetter Drive, near Bonnie View Road, at about 10:22 p.m. on May 20. Responding officers located a man, identified as Alan Bates, lying near the front gate of the apartment complex with a gunshot wound. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded and transported Bates to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities released surveillance footage from a nearby business showing the moment Bates was shot. In the footage, a man and two women were seen running from the apartment complex immediately after the shooting. Dallas police asked for the public’s help in identifying the three individuals in the footage.
A witness, who told Dallas police she was “100% positive” Barber was the man in the footage, picked him out from a photo lineup without hesitation, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. The woman said she identified Barber because she had seen him in the area numerous times and had hosted him in her apartment.
The witness also told police that she did not see Barber for a month after the shooting and that the 19-year-old had cut off his dreadlocks when she finally saw him.
The arrest warrant affidavit revealed Barber and the victim had allegedly gotten into a physical altercation several days before the shooting incident. Barber allegedly suffered a broken nose and a black eye during the altercation.
Barber was booked into the Dallas County Jail on a murder charge on Tuesday at 1:18 a.m. A magistrate set his bond at $500,000. It is not clear whether the suspect had an attorney.
